Why does my record link say it does not exist?
A record link shows "No record at this address." when the id is not valid, never existed, or has passed its one-year life. This guide covers the checks to make, how to recover a lost link, and what to do after expiry.
ON THIS PAGE
01What the page says
Opening a record address that cannot be found shows a page headed "No record at this address." with the line "The record does not exist or has expired. Records are kept for one year." Two buttons sit below it: "Your records", which goes to /records, and "Open the instrument", which goes to /app. It is one page, not two different messages. Behind it the server answers with an HTTP 404, and search engines are told not to index it.
02Check the id first
A record id is exactly 10 characters, written in lower case letters a to z and the digits 2 to 7. There is no 0, 1, 8 or 9 in an id, and no capital letters. An address with a capital letter, a missing character or an extra one is treated as a record that does not exist, because the id is looked up exactly as written. Compare the address letter by letter with the one you were given, and remove any trailing text that a messaging app or email program may have added.
03Use Open record on /records
On /records, the box labelled "Record link or id" with the placeholder "Paste a record link or id" accepts either a whole link or the bare id. The "Open record" button becomes active only when the last 10 characters form a valid id, so if the button stays grey, the id is malformed. Pasting a link that ends in extra text after the id, such as a tracking tail, can also keep it grey; paste just the id instead.
04Records you froze are listed per browser
The list on /records shows only records frozen in this browser on this device. It is stored in the browser, not in your account, so a record frozen on a phone does not appear on a laptop. The list holds up to 200 of your most recent records. The row buttons are "View record" and a cross to forget the record on this device. Forgetting removes it from the list only; the record itself stays reachable by its link.
05Records are kept for one year
A frozen record is stored for 365 days from the day it was frozen, and then it is gone. The period cannot be extended and a record cannot be recovered afterwards. Within that year it is public: anyone with the link can open it, with no sign-in. Nothing in the product edits or deletes a record sooner. The record page has a Packet button that downloads its full contents as a JSON file, which is the way to keep a copy of a record beyond its year.
06When the freeze itself failed
If the instrument showed "Freeze failed" with a reason, no record was created and its address will never work. The same is true if you copied a link from an unfinished attempt. Go back to /app, select the hour you want, and press Freeze record again. The new link appears beside the Record label in the inspector and is copied to your clipboard if the browser allows.
07Recreating an expired or lost record
You cannot reopen an expired record. If you need evidence for the same time and place, open /app, set the place, height and limit, scrub to the hour, and freeze again. Be aware that the new record uses the forecast as it stands now, not as it stood originally, so it is a new piece of evidence, not a copy. Keep the original link and the downloaded packet if the first record matters.
Questions
How long are records kept?
365 days from the day they were frozen, regardless of plan. After that the address shows "No record at this address." and nothing can bring it back. Download the packet from the record page if you need to keep the contents longer.
Can I extend a record's life?
No. There is no control for it. The only option is to freeze a new record, which gets a new link and a fresh year but captures the forecast as it is at that time.
Do I need to be signed in to view a record?
No. A record is public to anyone who has its link, and the page loads without an account. That also means anyone you share the link with can see everything in it, so share with care.
I froze a record on another device and cannot find it.
The list on /records belongs to the browser that froze it. Open the other device and copy the link from its /records list or from the inspector, then paste it into Open record here. If you no longer have that device, search your own messages or email for the link, as there is no account-wide list.
Why do capital letters break the link?
Record ids are made of lower case letters and the digits 2 to 7, and they are matched exactly. A capital letter changes the id, so it will not be found. Retype it in lower case, or paste the original link rather than typing.
